PARIS, Mar 11 In The Hague, police used water cannons to disperse climate activists, earlier blocked one of the main highways in the city — the A12 highway, said the organization Extinction Rebellion Nederland.
The activists who blocked the traffic on this highway protested because of the allocation of state subsidies for the extraction of minerals. On the morning of Saturday, March 11, the police and the municipality warned that such a blockade was prohibited and called on the demonstrators to move to another area. The mayor of The Hague, Jan van Zanen, gave permission to use water cannons to disperse the activists.
«Police used water cannons on peaceful demonstrators who are not directly on the A12. Can anyone explain how this is possible?» — Extinction Rebellion Nederland tweeted.
The organization has also released videos showing half-naked activists holding placards standing in front of a water cannon that sprays water directly on them.
Thousands of people are also taking part in a demonstration in The Hague called for by the Farmers Defense Force (FDF) on Saturday. They are protesting the government's environmental policy, and are also outraged by the accumulated social problems.
