MOSCOW, Mar 17 Tropical cyclone death toll «Freddie» in Malawi has risen to 326, reports Agence France-Presse, citing President Lazarus Chakwera.
Earlier, it was said that 225 people died and more than 700 were injured.
«Since yesterday, the death toll from this natural disaster has increased from 225 to 326, the number of displaced persons has doubled to 183,159,” Chakvera said.
Chakvera was criticized for not rushing to return from a foreign tour when a cyclone hit the country. The President on Monday announced the introduction of a natural disaster regime in the Southern Province, while in Doha for a summit of the least developed countries. On Wednesday, Chakvera declared two weeks of national mourning in connection with the victims due to Cyclone Freddie in the country.
