ANKARA, Mar 17 Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu said that he had discussed NATO expansion with his Finnish counterpart Pekka Haavisto.
Finnish President Sauli Niinistö is on a visit to Turkey. The visit of the Finnish leader began on Thursday with a visit to the earthquake area in southeastern Turkey, the Office of the Finnish President reported. Initially, it was reported that the talks between the Finnish and Turkish presidents would take place in Istanbul, but later they were moved to Ankara, the Finnish press specified.
«Before the visit of the President of Finland, we met with the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Finland. We discussed the issues of NATO expansion and thanked them for their support in eliminating the consequences of the earthquake,» Cavusoglu wrote on Twitter.
On May 17, 2022, Finland applied for membership in the North Atlantic Alliance, only two countries out of 30 — Turkey and Hungary — have not yet ratified it.
