The magistrate of polling station No. 422 of the Tagansky district of Moscow fined the Wikimedia Foundation two million rubles for refusing to remove an article about a military unit from Wikipedia. This was reported to RIA Novosti in court.
We are talking about the 40th engineer-sapper regiment, based in Ishim, Tyumen region. The regiment, according to the investigative publication Proekt, participated in the attack on Ukraine from the north-east of the country.
In January 2023, a court ruled to block the Wikipedia article at the request of the military prosecutor's office. The text of the decision has not yet been published.
The article, citing open sources and materials from Ukrainian journalists, cited the location address of the unit and data on the death of regiment commander Oleksandr Kornik near Chernihiv in March 2022.
< p>According to the filing cabinet of Moscow justices of the peace, since July 2022, Wikimedia has been fined ten times due to its refusal to remove materials, including those related to the war (Article 13.41 of the Code of Administrative Offenses). The total amount of their fines, according to RIA Novosti, has increased to almost 17 million rubles
