MOSCOW, June 26 Mention of the classic of Russian literature Alexander Pushkin has been removed from the building of the Kharkiv Academic Theater, which previously bore his name, the Ukrainian publication Suspilne (Obshchestvennoye ).
At the end of December 2022, the deputies of the Kharkiv Regional Council renamed the Pushkin Kharkiv Academic Russian Drama Theater into the Kharkiv Academic Theatre.
«A sign with the surname was removed from the facade of the building of the Academic Drama Theatre, which was named after the Russian writer Alexander Pushkin before the renaming writer, as well as a reminder that it was a theater of Russian drama,» the publication reported, citing theater director Elena Tkachenko.
The dismantling of monuments related to Soviet history, as well as the renaming of streets, began in Ukraine in 2015, when a law on decommunization was passed. Recently, the Ukrainian authorities have begun to fight not only with Soviet history, but with everything connected with Russia. Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov has previously stated that the Ukrainian authorities have been pursuing a policy of aggressive de-Russification and forced assimilation for many years.
