MOSCOW, 27 Jun. Lew Palter died of lung cancer at 94, writes Deadline.
He acted in films and taught acting.
“The students respected him, he encouraged to seek the truth in their work and life. His legacy will live on in many careers, destinies and stories,” said Travis Prenston, dean of the theater school at the California Institute of the Arts.
Palter was born in Brooklyn. He began his theatrical career with participation in the New York performances «Mad of Chaillot», «Enemy of the People». As a director, he created several off-Broadway productions.
In 1967, he made his television debut — he starred in the TV series «Run Your Life». Subsequently, he appeared in the TV projects The A-Team, Charlie's Angels, Columbo, L.A. Law and others. He was known as Detective Clark in the TV series Delvecchio (1976 — 1977).
But he is best known for his role as Isidore Strauss in James Cameron's Titanic.The prototype of the character was a German-American entrepreneur and co-owner of a large supermarket chain.He and his wife Ida refused to board the boat and gave their place to the maid who worked for them.The last time the couple were seen holding hands on the deck.In one scene of the film, Isidore was shown calming Ida in the cabin of a sinking ship.The widow of Stockton Rush, who died in the tragedy with the bathyscaphe «Titan», is the great-great-granddaughter of the Strauss.
