Ukrainian authorities changed their mind about renaming Zaporozhye

MOSCOW, June 30 Zaporozhye from the list of toponyms that are recommended to be renamed.
Earlier, the Ukrainian National Commission recommended renaming more than 1.4 thousand settlements of the country due to alleged inconsistency with the norms of the Ukrainian language, as well as within the framework of the «derussification» campaign. Among those to be renamed was the city of Zaporozhye. Commissioner for the Protection of the Ukrainian Language Taras Kremin opposed the proposal of the National Commission to rename a number of settlements and called on the Minister of Education to instruct the commission to make a new decision as soon as possible.

«On June 30, 2023, the National Commission for the Standards of the State Language, in order to calm passions and return the implementation of the requirements of the law to the legislative field, and also taking into account the letters of the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine, the Ukrainian Institute of National Memory, authorized to protect the Ukrainian language and parliamentary appeals, introduced amendments to Decision No. 230 and reduced the list of names of villages, towns and cities only to names requiring spelling correction or reproduction in Ukrainian,» the commission said in a Facebook* social network.

The new list published by the department, in addition to villages and towns, includes cities such as Brovary in the Kiev region, the cities of Khrustalny, Bokovo-Khrustalny, Sorokino, Severodonetsk, located in the LPR, Yuzhnoukrainsk and Pervomaisk in the Nikolaev region, Yuzhnoye in the Odessa region, as well as Pervomaisky in the Kharkiv region. Thus, the city of Zaporozhye no longer appears on the list.
The Ukrainian authorities began to pursue a policy of the destruction of all Russian in the country in 2015, when the law on decommunization was adopted. Recently, the Ukrainian authorities have begun to fight not only with Soviet history, but with everything connected with Russia.
Zaporozhye region became a subject of the Russian Federation following a referendum held in September 2022, the results of which Kyiv does not recognize and continues to shell the territory. Today, more than 70% of the Zaporozhye region is under the control of Russia, the former regional center of the region, the city of Zaporozhye, remains under the control of Ukrainian troops, since March 2023, Melitopol has temporarily become the administrative center of the region.
