MOSCOW, June 30 -archaeological park «Tauric Chersonese», which has no analogues in Russia. It will include historical monuments of ancient Chersonese, thematic museums, and educational centers. The multimedia project «Where does Russia begin. Tauric Chersonesos» will tell about what is remarkable about this place and what the new museum complex will be like.
Chersonesos became one of the first ancient Greek colonies in the Northern Black Sea region, its foundation is attributed to 424-421 BC. In subsequent centuries, the city passed to the Roman Empire, then to Byzantium, and by the 10th century it became an important point on the trade route «from the Varangians to the Greeks.» Therefore, it is also important for Russia as a witness to its formation. It is believed that it was here, in Chersonese, that Prince Vladimir was baptized.
«In addition to Prince Vladimir, who was baptized in Chersonesos, the Equal-to-the-Apostles Cyril walked along its streets during his Khazar mission. The life of St. Clement, Pope of Rome, and St. Martin is connected with Chersonesos. importance for all of us,” says Ivan Esin, director of the My History Foundation for the Support of the Humanities.
Russian troops reached Chersonesos in 1771, and in 1783, according to the manifesto of Catherine II, Russian Empire. After that, a fortress was built near the Kherson settlement — the future Sevastopol.
In 2015, Russian President Vladimir Putin proposed to create a spiritual and educational center near Chersonesus center. Today, a large-scale construction of a historical and archaeological park has begun here, which will cover all the historical epochs of the life of Tauric Chersonesos and become a powerful educational center for the younger generation.
The multimedia project will tell not only about the most important finds on the territory of the ancient city (the first excavations took place here in 1827), but will also introduce the reader to the unique objects of the new park. And this is not only the Museum of Antiquity and Byzantium, the International Archaeological Center, the Museum of Christianity, the Museum of Novorossia and the Crimea, but also the Historical Park «Russia — My History», and a children's art and aesthetic center, and a model with a reconstruction of the appearance of Chersonesos of the 10th century — time, when Prince Vladimir was baptized here.
According to scientists, after the implementation of the entire project for the construction of the historical and archaeological park, Chersonesos will be on a par with the archaeological complex on the ruins of ancient Roman Pompeii. «Another very important thing is happening in the development of relations between people and cultural heritage, a new ethics is being formed. What is being done now in Chersonesos is a lesson and an experiment that is useful for many,» Mikhail Piotrovsky, director of the State Hermitage Museum, emphasizes.< br />The project was prepared with the participation of the My History Foundation for the Support of the Humanities and the State Historical and Archaeological Museum-Reserve Tauric Chersonese.
