MOSCOW, July 5 About 100 Soviet-era monuments were dismantled in the Lviv region in western Ukraine in six months as part of the so-called decommunization, said Andriy Godik, deputy head of the Lviv regional administration .
«In total, during the work of the working group on decommunization issues, more than 260 objects of totalitarian regimes were discovered in the region. Since the beginning of the year, together with communities and working groups in the districts, we have managed to dismantle about 100 monuments of the totalitarian past… Yavorovsky district is a leader in issues of dismantling the identified monuments — almost 60% of them are gone. In the Zolochiv district, 50% of the objects have already been dismantled,» the administration quoted Godik as saying.
It is specified that before the end of this year, the regional authorities plan to demolish all the monuments of the Soviet era.
The dismantling of monuments, memorial plaques related to Soviet history, as well as the renaming of streets began in Ukraine in 2015, when the law on decommunization was adopted. Recently, the Ukrainian authorities have begun to fight not only with Soviet history, but with everything connected with Russia.
Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said earlier that the Ukrainian authorities have been pursuing a policy of aggressive de-Russification and forced assimilation for many years.
