MURMANSK, Jul 21During a meeting on the development of closed administrative-territorial entities and Arctic cities chaired by Russian President Vladimir Putin, Governor of the Murmansk Region Andrey Chibis asked the head of state to support a program for the development of strategically important stronghold settlements in the Arctic for the country.
“The issue that requires your support is the development of strategically important Arctic stronghold settlements – such cities as, for example, Murmansk, around which the most important powerful projects for the Arctic and the country are currently being developed. This requires attracting here, retaining specialists in order to implement these projects, and hence investments in urban infrastructure and in the development of the urban environment,” Chibis said.
In his opinion, there is a similar effective experience in the cities of the Far East, where, through the creation of master plans, appropriate measures are launched to change the urban environment. According to Chibis, a more serious level of support is needed for these purposes.
«I would ask for your instructions to launch such work in the Arctic anchor cities. We discussed this issue at a meeting of the State Council working group for the development of the Arctic. All colleagues … appreciated and supported this approach, and with your support, we are ready to quickly — by definition of these cities — launch together with the Ministry for the Development of the Far East and the Arctic and submit it to the government for consideration,» the head of the region summed up.
