India begins countdown to mission to the Sun

NEW DELHI, Sep 1 The Indian Space Research Organization has launched a countdown to the launch of the Aditya-L1 solar mission, the agency said on X (formerly Twitter) .
«The countdown of 23 hours and 40 minutes leading to the launch at 11:50 (9.20 Moscow time) on September 2, 2023, began today at 12:10 local time,» the message says.
The task of the Indian solar mission will be to study the Sun from an orbit located at the Lagrange point L1, where the forces of gravitational attraction of the Earth and the Sun are equal. It is located on the straight line connecting the Sun and the Earth, at a distance of about 1.5 million kilometers from the Earth. This arrangement will allow Aditya-L1 to constantly observe the Sun, without being distracted by eclipses. It will also enable scientists to study solar activity and its impact on space weather in real time.

The spacecraft carries seven instruments to observe the photosphere, chromosphere and the outermost layers of the Sun (the corona) using electromagnetic field, particle and magnetic field detectors.

The Aditya L1 mission is expected to provide information for understanding the problem of solar corona heating, coronal mass ejection, pre-flare activity and its characteristics, space weather dynamics, particle and field propagation, and others.
