NTI spoke about the problem of civilian UAVs on foreign chips

MOSCOW, September 20 Civil unmanned aircraft systems (UAVs) operating on foreign chips and architecture are poorly protected from hacking by hackers; it is necessary to create and develop them in the Russian Federation its own component base and special software and hardware solutions for protecting drones, this opinion was expressed by experts from NTI Aeronet.
«»As long as we use foreign-made chips on foreign architecture (including in civilian UAVs — ed.), we cannot guarantee any security. This is the main threat that exists today. From a software point of view, we have no analogues in the world. Ours programmers, specialists, create a unique digital environment in Russia (banking as an example). But as long as this is all on foreign processors, chips, and architecture, it all doesn’t make much sense. We need our own developments in this area,” believes Andrey Novikov , expert at the Aeronet infrastructure center based at Moscow State Technical University. Bauman.
The expert is confident that antiviruses will not help protect drones. He recalled that vulnerabilities have been repeatedly found in Intel processors, allowing access to the computer from the inside, bypassing operating systems, and so on. “They called them random, closed them, but where are the guarantees? RISC architecture, RISC-V, ARM — we don’t fully know what capabilities there are for providing data,” Novikov added.

First Deputy General Director and co-founder of the Fly Drone company (a company participating in the Aeronet NTI market), Alexander Kaniovsky, claims that the goals of hackers may be theft of a drone for the purpose of reflashing it for further illegal use, physical destruction of the drone (for example, dropping it on the ground) , interception of control in order to direct the drone to some object and theft of footage stored in the drone’s memory.

«Old drones are very difficult to protect; updates will not help here. Not just algorithms are required, but software and hardware solutions for protection: encryption of the control channel, pseudo-random tuning of the operating frequency, navigation without the use of satellite communication systems and more powerful ground control stations. We need to more actively develop and implement technologies to protect our drones; Russian developers already have serious developments in this area,” the expert said.
