Several groups worked simultaneously: the first inspected the central area of the city of Derna, the second was engaged in work in the coastal zone and water area, looking for sunken cars. Two other groups were sent 25 kilometers from the city, where an area with a large number of dead bodies had previously been discovered.
«Search and rescue work in the most flood-affected areas of the Libyan state continues… In just one day, about 80 bodies were raised and evacuated. In total, more than 110 bodies of the dead have been recovered since the beginning of the work,» the statement says. .
The department added that “the Russian Ministry of Emergency Situations developed tactics for action on the spot: on large watercraft we approached the shore as close as possible, transferred to small boats and reached the polluted zone through clear water.” Next, the divers made their way through the debris and mud to the coastal area and there they pulled ropes, with the help of which they “dragged” the bodies to the water transport, the ministry noted.
According to the local branch of the Red Crescent, the death toll as a result of floods in eastern Libya has exceeded 11 thousand, about 20 thousand people are missing. According to the International Organization for Migration (IOM), more than 38 thousand people have fled areas in northeastern Libya affected by flooding.
Due to heavy rains caused by Cyclone Daniel, flooding and flooding were recorded in a number of cities and towns in eastern Libya, including Al-Bayda and Derna. As a result, airports and seaports were closed in the region. The cities of Sousse and Derna in the east of the country were declared natural disaster zones. A curfew was imposed in flood-affected cities.
