The largest exhibit will be the theatrical backdrop that Roerich created in 1908 for the ballet “Polovtsian Dances.” It was staged in Paris as part of the first season of the enterprise «Russian Ballet of Sergei Diaghilev». This is a recent acquisition of the Tretyakov Gallery.

Visitors to the exhibition will also be presented with over a hundred works of painting and graphics: from the famous masterpieces “Messenger” and “Overseas Guests” to works of the Indian period “Guga Chohan” and “Messenger”. Roerich will be presented not only as a “master of the mountains”, a creator of easel works, but also as an artist who successfully realized his talent in theater and architecture.

Gallery specialists selected exhibits from more than five thousand works by Roerich, explained the curator of the exhibition, curator of museum objects in the department of painting of the second half of the 19th — early 20th centuries of the Tretyakov Gallery, Vladimir Nikishin.
“»We show the multifaceted Roerich, we show different periods of his work… In the first part, we, of course, start with his early work… We selected all the best at the exhibition, about 150 works out of five thousand, can you imagine? This is such a selection of the highest level,» Nikishin said.

The exhibition will include not only works of art, but also documentary materials from Russian museum collections.
The exhibition will be complemented by Polovtsian idols and art monuments of Ancient Asia, Tibetan thangkas, memorial items, archival materials, books by Nicholas Roerich on archeology, travel, as well as philosophical works.
The exhibition will be open to visitors from October 10 to March 10, 2024.
