The updated BMW M4 sports car may receive a boosted six-cylinder engine

It is expected that mass production of the refreshed “charged” coupe of the Bavarian brand will begin in March next year.

BMW introduced the 4 series in 2013: then it was decided to separate the two-door modifications of the three-ruble car into a separate family. The current second generation of the model debuted in 2020. Let us remind you that the fourth series is available in the form of a two-door coupe and convertible, as well as a five-door liftback with the addition of a Gran Coupe. The model also has a top-end version of the M4, which is being developed by the BMW M division, which celebrated its 50th anniversary last year.

Now the Bavarian company is developing a restyled version of the BMW M4. Previously, the designer of Kolesa.ru suggested what the updated “charged” coupe would look like: judging by the renderings, the models may leave the huge “nostrils” of the signature radiator grille, despite the fact that not all fans of the sports car have come to terms with this decision.

Earlier, spy shots of a camouflaged prototype of the refreshed coupe during road tests appeared on the Internet. Judging by these photos, the model as a whole will receive minimal visual changes during the update. Probably, the sports car will receive different head optics and new taillights, while the design of both bumpers will remain the same.

Changes are also expected under the hood; the relevant information with reference to “leaked” internal BMW documents was published on the Bimmer Post forum. It is expected that the S58 inline six-cylinder engine in the restyled top-end all-wheel drive M4 Competition coupe will be able to produce 20 hp more. more than the current version. Judging by the documents, the rear-wheel drive version will not receive this increase.

Note that now the most powerful version of the BMW M4 is equipped with a 3.0-liter engine, its output is 510 hp and the maximum torque is 650 Nm. Probably, the updated version will increase power to 530 hp. In the current sports car, the engine is paired with an eight-speed M Steptronic automatic transmission. The coupe needs 3.9 seconds to reach the first hundred, and the top speed is limited to 250 km/h (with the M Driver's package – 290 km/h).

It is likely that the engine characteristics of the base version of the BMW M4 will remain the same. Let us remind you that such a car has the same in-line twin-turbo six under the hood, but its output is more modest – 480 hp. and 550 Nm of torque. This engine comes with a six-speed manual, and this two-door car needs 4.2 seconds to accelerate from zero to 100 km/h.

According to preliminary information, the updated “charged” coupe will be presented in the first months of 2024, and mass production of the refreshed BMW M4 for the European and American markets will be launched in March the same year.

Recall that last summer it became known that the next BMW M3 and M4 could be completely “green”: the presentation of the new generation Bavarian models is expected to take place in 2027-2028 years.
