Minus the compact crossover: Jeep Renegade leaves the North American market

Sales of the American brand's model in the home market have been declining over the past few years. The small SUV will continue to be offered in Europe, Brazil, Mexico and several other countries.

The Jeep brand is now owned by the auto giant Stellantis, which appeared in early 2021 as a result of the merger of the FCA concern and the PSA group. The brand has been producing the Renegade compact crossover since 2014, and it underwent restyling at the beginning of last year. However, in the domestic market, this did not save the model from the noticeable decline in sales that has emerged in recent years.

2016 was a record year for SUVs in the United States: then dealers managed to sell more than 106 thousand copies. In 2018, the Jeep Renegade compact crossover sold 97,062 units in the United States; in 2019, the figure dropped to 76,885 units; in 2020 – to 62,847 units; in 2021 – to 47,137 units.

At the end of last year, Americans bought only 27,549 units, which is 41.5% less than the year before. This also means a solid decline of 71.6% compared to 2018. In the first three quarters of this year, the result decreased by 35%; Jeep expects that by the end of the year it will reach the mark of 21 thousand units.

This led to the company deciding to abandon sales of the model in the North American market (in Canada the situation with demand is obviously similar). As Automotive News reports, citing a brand representative, the 2023 model year will be the last for the Jeep Renegade in the specified region. However, the model will still be present in a number of other countries: for example, the compact crossover will continue to be sold in Europe, Brazil, Mexico and other markets.

The company explained that the departure of the Jeep Renegade from the North American market will allow the automaker to focus its efforts on promoting other, more popular models in the United States. After the final departure of the SUV, the entry-level model will be the Jeep Compass. Note that in 2022, dealers in the United States sold 86,175 copies, which is almost 14% more than a year earlier. This year the model is also showing growth: in the first three quarters, Americans bought 71,561 units, which is almost 7% more than a year earlier.

Note that the starting price of the 2023 Jeep Renegade model year is $29,445, this car is equipped with a 1.3-liter turbo-four. In the States, its output is 177 hp and maximum torque is 285 Nm. The entry-level Jeep Compass costs a little more: the 2024 Sport trim costs $29,995. Under the hood of this crossover is a 2.0-liter four-cylinder turbo engine producing 200 hp. (300 Nm).

The manufacturer continues to prepare to introduce new products to the market. So, one of them will be the all-electric mid-size SUV Jeep Recon, it will be based on the STLA Large modular platform, and production will be established at the Mexican Stellantis plant in Toluca. Some technical details about the future SUV became known at the end of last month.
