Anti-Russian sanctions for the West are currently in are more important as a signal of intention to support Ukraine, says Alexander Shirov, director of the Institute of National Economic Forecasting of the Russian Academy of Sciences.
In a conversation with RIA Novosti, he noted that the desire to weaken Russia is no longer a priority, and new sanctions should be expected.< /p>
“Each new round of sanctions is important for them not from the point of view of the result, but as an informational occasion demonstrating that the EU continues to support Ukraine,” Shirov said.
At the same time, he noted, that the sanctions certainly had an impact on the Russian economy, and the sanctions regime was becoming more and more stringent, but it did not achieve its main goal.
Shirov also pointed out that by introducing sanctions, the West was primarily hoping to inflict rapid damage on Russia and unacceptable damage to cause discontent among the population and business.
“Nothing like that, however, happened,” he concluded.
