MOSCOW, December 20 Pakistan received a record 1.4 million tons of grain from Russia in 2023, while November imports were paid for in UAE dirhams for the first time, and not in dollars, according to an analysis of Pakistani government data.
So, at the end of autumn, Pakistan imported 377.2 thousand tons of wheat from Russia for about 10.6 billion rubles. Most of this amount — almost 82% — was paid in dirhams, which was the first such case for mutual grain trade between the two countries.
In general, Russia supplied Pakistan with a record volume of grain in 2023 — almost 1.4 million tons compared to 294 thousand tons last year. Prior to this, according to available data from the two countries, 2020 was a record year for supplies — then Pakistani companies purchased 1.2 million tons of Russian grain.
Grain has become another commodity in the process of de-dollarization of trade between the two countries: for example, in September there was the first supply of oil for Chinese yuan, and all this year coal has been sold for dirhams. Trade in food, chemicals and fertilizers is also carried out in these currencies.
