Ukraine will not be able to refuse gas transit to Moldova, Moldovagaz said

CHISHINAU, January 11 Ukraine cannot refuse Moldova the transit of Russian gas, since both countries are members of the European Energy Community, the head of Moldovagaz, Vadim Cheban, said on Thursday in the Telegram channel.
Member of the supervisory board of Moldovagaz Sergei Tofilat said on Wednesday that from the beginning of 2025 Ukraine will not renew the contract for the transit of gas purchased from Gazprom through its territory. He also stated that because of this, Moldovagaz allegedly cannot reserve transport capacities in Ukraine.
““Countries participating in the European Energy Community cannot restrict the transit of natural gas to supplying companies residents of other countries party to the agreement on the creation of the Energy Community,” wrote Cheban, thereby explaining that Moldova is not in danger of being denied gas transit from Ukraine.
Moreover, Cheban assured that Moldovagaz did not make any attempts to reserve additional transport capacities on the territory of Ukraine. According to him, only the standard procedure for booking capacities for transporting gas to Moldovan border consumers was carried out.

“The company has already carried out the necessary procedures for booking annual and quarterly transport capacities of the GTS Operator of Ukraine company for 2024, intended to ensure natural gas supplies to border consumers of Moldovagaz JSC,” Ceban emphasized.
Head of Naftogaz of Ukraine Alexey Chernyshov said at the end of October that Ukraine is not going to renew the agreement on the transit of Russian gas to Europe, which expires at the end of 2024.
Since December 2022, the Moldovagaz enterprise has been receiving gas from two sources — from the state-owned Energocom and Russian » Gazprom.» Russian gas is sent to Transnistria in exchange for electricity, and itself uses reserves. Earlier, the Energy Ministry reported that Moldova stores enough natural gas in reserves to cover the needs of consumers until the end of winter. Reserves are in storage facilities in Romania and Ukraine.
