MOSCOW, January 14 Frederick X became the new king of Denmark after abdication of the throne by his mother Margrethe II, who reigned for 52 years.
Margrethe II signed her abdication at a ceremony at the royal Christiansborg Castle on Sunday, at which point Frederick, sitting at her right hand, became the new monarch. The ceremony was broadcast on DR TV channel.
In her New Year's address, the now former Queen of Denmark Margrethe II said that she would abdicate the throne on January 14, 2024, when she will complete 52 years of reign. The 83-year-old queen announced that she would leave the throne to her son, Crown Prince Frederik.
Previously, the Danish Royal Palace reported that Queen Margrethe II has been on the royal throne longer than all her predecessors in the entire history of Denmark.
