The serial film tells the story of how in the 18th century, during a smallpox epidemic, Catherine the Great decided to show her subjects by personal example that vaccination would protect them from a terrible disease that claimed thousands of lives. Will the Empress's risk be worth it? Will she find support from her favorite, Count Grigory Orlov (Sergei Marin)? Will the palace intrigues weaved by Countess Ksenia Bolshakova (Svetlana Smirnova-Katsagadzhieva) and the Chancellor, Count Nikita Panin (Philip Yankovsky) interfere with her grandiose plan? This is what the film is about.
“I think this is an interesting historical film that partly echoes today. In the 18th century, both in Europe and in Russia, there was a terrible smallpox epidemic, people died in the thousands. Catherine the Great with a small retinue hid from the disease in Tsarskoe Selo, not knowing what to do. Our entire history is built on this doubt of the empress – to get vaccinated or not – “, – the press service of “Russia” quoted the director of the project.
Yegor Anashkin also noted that, in his opinion, “Irina Pegova in the role of Catherine became one of the most beautiful Catherines in the history of cinema: this is her role, absolutely her character.”

“I had a unique opportunity to dive quite deeply into the history of Catherine’s life. I was given access to all the archives possible, I read documents, her letters stored in the Lenin Library, in the National Library in Tsarskoe Selo. From books, from memoirs , from the letters I wrote down various phrases of Catherine, which, it seemed to me, fit our script, and asked the director and producers to allow me to insert them into our story. Catherine was terribly afraid of smallpox since childhood, for her it was really the most terrible disease in the world. And the fact that she overcame this fear is truly an absolute feat,” said the actress.

Philip Yankovsky added that The shooting took place in the real apartments of the queen, in her palaces.
“”The plot of the film “The Tsar's Vaccination” tells the story of how the smallpox epidemic began in Russia and how mass vaccination was carried out, which saved tens of thousands of lives. This is probably a little similar to what you and I recently experienced : history echoes through the centuries, this also has some irony and historical background,” noted the actor.
The project was created at the Moskino film studio with the support of the Internet Development Institute (ANO IRI).
