TEHRAN, June 23Iran is developing the idea of an offshore rial, which it plans to soon use in financial transactions with Russia, the head of the Central Bank said at the opening of the project to introduce the digital rial into public circulation Iran Mohammad Farzin. His words are quoted by the ILNA agency.
“The idea of an offshore rial is being developed… We will soon launch the first (project — ed.) offshore rial (in transactions — ed.) with Russia,» said the head of the Iranian Central Bank.
Earlier this week, the public relations department of the Central Bank of Iran announced that Tehran is introducing a digital rial into public circulation, with customers being able to make purchases and transfer funds «by scanning a barcode generated by the provided software.»
According to the information on the website, the Central Bank of Iran began working on the digital rial project three years ago, and since the end of June 2024, with the participation of two Iranian banks, Mellat and Tejarat, this project has entered the «stage of wide testing with the possibility of public use», which started from Kish Island.
