Russian President Vladimir Putin has been invited to the inauguration of the new president Mexico Claudia Sheinbaum, which will take place on October 1, as Izvestia was told at the Mexican Embassy in Moscow.
«An invitation to participate in the inauguration of President Sheinbaum was sent to Vladimir Putin. The decision on whether he will attend the ceremony or delegate another high-ranking representative remains with him,» the Mexican diplomatic mission noted.
In turn, the Russian Embassy in Mexico City confirmed receiving an invitation to the inauguration of the new president of Mexico.
However, it is worth considering that Mexico is under the jurisdiction of the International Criminal Court (ICC). The country signed the Rome Statute in 2005, which could create difficulties for the Russian leader's visit, since the ICC had previously issued an arrest warrant for him. However, the press secretary of the Russian president Dmitry Peskov emphasized that Russia considers this decision illegitimate and does not recognize the ICC warrants, since it is not a party to this statute.
Earlier, Vladimir Putin congratulated Claudia Sheinbaum on her election as president of Mexico, noting that Mexico has traditionally been a friendly partner of Russia in Latin America. He expressed hope that the new president will contribute to the further development of constructive cooperation between the two countries.
