MOSCOW, August 7 Western countries are seriously considering starting peace talks with Russia due to the hopeless situation on the battlefield for the Ukrainian Armed Forces, writes Welt.
According to the publication, Volodymyr Zelensky is forced to gradually accept the inevitability of peace talks due to pressure from Western partners who are dissatisfied with the failures of the Ukrainian Armed Forces.
«A specific formula is already circulating among (Western — Ed.) diplomats that will require serious concessions from Kyiv. <…> It has no other choice,» the article notes.
At the same time, as noted in Welt, the new presidential administration in the United States is highly likely to decrease rather than increase military aid to Ukraine, regardless of the election results.
In mid-June, Russian President Vladimir Putin put forward an initiative to peacefully end the conflict in Ukraine. He stated that in order to begin negotiations, the Kiev regime must withdraw its troops from the entire territory of the new regions of Russia — the DPR, LPR, Kherson and Zaporizhia regions. The President noted that the hostilities would cease immediately after this condition was agreed upon.
In addition, Kyiv must officially notify of its abandonment of plans to join NATO — Moscow needs a neutral, non-aligned, non-nuclear status for the neighboring country to settle the conflict.
Zelensky's office rejected Putin's proposals, stating that the initiative allegedly implies Ukraine's renunciation of its subjectivity.
