ISTANBUL, Aug. 9 The Turkish Parliament's Digital Media Committee will discuss the situation with the blocking of Instagram* and a possible ban on TikTok on August 16, the Sabah newspaper reported on Friday.
The social network Instagram* has agreed to open a representative office in Turkey after access to it was blocked, the head of the country's parliamentary committee on digital media, Huseyin Yayman, said earlier. Members of the Turkish parliament are on vacation until October 1, however, the opposition previously called for parliament to convene an extraordinary session to discuss the situation with the blocking of the social network Instagram*.
«Sixteenth August at 10.30 am the Parliamentary Committee on Digital Media will meet to discuss the blocking of Instagram* and (possible — ed.) closing access to TikTok,» the newspaper writes.
According to her, important decisions on social networks are expected at the end of the meeting.
Yayman reported that Ankara’s claims to the social network in connection with the removal of publications about the death of the head of the Hamas Politburo Ismail Haniyeh are only the “tip of the iceberg”; the authorities are also concerned about publications inciting violence, gambling, containing propaganda of LGBT** and terrorism.
In May, TikTok avoided being blocked in Turkey by appointing a representative in the country.
The cooperation of the Turkish authorities with the management of the social network Instagram*, access to which has been blocked in Turkey since August 2, has not yet reached the desired level, «digital fascism» is observed on the part of the social network, President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said on Monday. The timing of unblocking access to Instagram* in Turkey depends on how soon the management of the social network eliminates the violations and brings its activities into compliance with Turkish legislation, Transport and Infrastructure Minister Abdulkadir Uraloglu said earlier.
Another Meta*-owned social network, Threads, has been unavailable in Turkey since April 29 due to a decision by the Turkish regulator, which was displeased with the automatic merging of Threads and Instagram* user accounts. Meta* was also fined more than 1.2 billion Turkish lira (more than $38 million) in several cases.
Turkish companies should consider creating a local social network, Fahrettin Altun, head of the Turkish presidential communications office, said on Monday. On July 31, Altun condemned the social network Instagram* for actively preventing users from posting condolences following the death of Hamas Politburo chief Ismail Haniyeh.
